Stockers/Bury/Woodoaks

A rapid trip around Bury and Stockers Lakes then on to Woodoaks Farm.
At Stockers; c15 Siskin, Kestrel, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Goldeneye, 2 Goosander. Bury; 5 Red Crested Pochard, 3 Ring Necked Parakeet.

Woodoaks Farm; 10 Yellowhammer, Skylark, Buzzard, mixed flock c120 Fieldfare and Redwing, approx 90% Fieldfare.

Scotsbridge Mill then Maple Lodge

At Scotsbridge; 2 Little Egret, 2 Water Rail.
Maple Lodge; 99% still frozen, c15 Siskin, 2 Ring Necked Parakeet, 12+ Long Tailed Tit.
At Maple Lodge I bumped into Pete and Margret. Margret gave me a disc with some pics she has taken. The Wryneck used in my blog title is one of them, another that caught my eye was the pic below of a pair of Goldeneye on Stockers.

Curlew

Today I visited 3 Herts birding sites with Brendan G. First stop was Mary Exton School in Hitchin, postcode SG4 0QA. On arrival we immediately connected with a Curlew happily feeding away on the school sports field.

Secondly, Whitwell Water Cress Beds; 18 Common Snipe, 4 Meadow Pipit, 3 Little Egret, Grey Wagtail, Teal.

Last port of call was East Hyde on the Herts/Beds border; 2 Jack Snipe, Common Snipe, Water Rail, 4 Little Grebe, Wigeon, Teal (all in Herts.)

3 Smew on Bury Lake

An hour at Maple Lodge, very quiet but the tranquility was nice after 2 days of relatives! 3 Long Tailed Tit, 4 Jay, 2 Great Spotted Woodpecker, c12 Siskin and a Redwing were the most noteworthy birds.

Half an hour at Bury Lake; 3 Smew, 6 Red Crested Pochard, 2+ Goldeneye.

Lone Waxwing and 2 Smew

At 09:30 this morning I was driving along Baldwins Lane towards Croxley Green when I noticed a single Waxwing perched on the telephone wires directly above the road. I had a quick look 45 minutes later but it was not to be seen.

At about 14:30 I visited Bury Lake and then Scotsbridge Mill with Paul F. At Bury lake we noted the following; Wigeon, Pochard, Gadwall, Shoveler, Goldeneye, 6 Red Crested Pochard, Ring Necked Parakeet and best of all 2 Smew both showing well close in. At Stockers Farm a lone Lapwing patrolled the "flooded field."
At Scotsbridge Mill we noted the following; c20 Teal, 3 Little Egret, c5 Water Rail, 8+ Snipe.

Abbots/Bedmond

An afternoon stroll around the fields between Abbots Langley and Bedmond. About an inch of snow and -2. The most noteworthy birds observed were as follows; 2 Buzzard, 2 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 10 Long Tailed Tit, Goldfinch, 3 Jay, Kestrel, c15 Yellowhammer.

Waxwings

I popped over to Hatfield today in search of the recently reported Waxwings. When I arrived I immediately connected with c70 Waxwings. I stayed for about 2 hours and their numbers steadily increased to c110. The birds spent most of the time perched up in the nearby poplars, then occasionally dropping down to feed on the rowan berries in Hillfield.

Hillfield is in the Birchwood area of Hatfield and off Longmead. The postcode for twat-nav users is AL10 0TZ

Rainham Marshes

Sat 11th December 2010. A visit to RSPB Rainham Marshes and adjecent river thames forshore.

River Thames between reserve and concrete barges; Avocet, Black Tailed Godwit, Dunlin, Grey Plover, Curlew, Redshank, Lapwing, Snipe, Shelduck, Teal, Wigeon, Gadwall, Greater Black Backed Gull, Lesser Black Backed Gull, Herring Gull, Common Gull, Meadow Pipit, Greenfinch, Kestrel, Skylark.

RSPB Rainham Marshes; Little Grebe, Great Crested Grebe, Pintail, Shoveler, Wigeon, Teal, 2 squealing Water Rail, Cetti's Warbler, Redwing, Fieldfare, Kestrel, Sparrowhawk, Herring Gull, Common Gull, Stonechat, Reed Bunting.

We spent some time going through the gulls looking for a Yellow Legged Gull but drew a blank. In one of the hides there was a "Gull i.d. Workshop" we even asked the Gull experts had they seen any Yellow Legged Gulls. We were told that there were none on the reserve. Checking sighting on birdguides this morning I noticed a report of "16 Yellow Legged Gulls RSPB Rainham Marshes (11/12/2010)" Oh well **it happens!

To finish the day we spent an hour on the Serin Mound looking for Short Eared Owl, however, we drew a blank here too.

07:30 this morning in my back garden 2 Coal Tit, Green Woodpecker.

Woodoaks Farm. Red Kite, c15 Linnet, c15 Yellowhammer, Reed Bunting, Green Woodpecker, Greenfinch, Meadow Pipit, Skylark, Fieldfare, Redwing, c170 Golden Plover, 6 Lapwing.

Finally over to Hertford with Brendan G in search of Waxwing, after nearly 2 hours we drew a blank only noteworthy bird a Sparrowhawk.

On Lynsters Lake; 12 Wigeon and on the farm 2 Egyptian Geese.

An afternoon stroll around the fields between Abbots Langley and Bedmond (sheppeys lane.) Most notable birds were as follows; Grey Heron, Fieldfare, 3 Great Spotted Woodpecker, 1 Green Woodpecker, 10+Pied Wagtail, 3 Jay, 10 Long Tailed Tit, Mixed flock of about 50 birds containing c30 Chaffinch, c15 Yellowhammer and c5 Goldfinch. Also a Muntjac.

At Stockers Farm 2 Little Owl in the nestbox tree and then on temporary fenceposts.

Velvet Scoter and Lesser Redpoll at Broadwater

A mid morning visit to Broadwater Lake nr Harefield. 14th November 2010.
Although not a comprehensive the list the following birds were seen; Velvet Scoter, Pochard, Great Crested Grebe, Little Grebe, Shoveler, Teal, Sparrowhawk, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Ring Necked Parakeet, Siskin, Goldfinch, Long Tailed Tit and 6 Lesser Redpoll in Silver Birch near entrance barrier to sailing club.
Grid reference for location of Velvet Scoter is TQ045893 which is roughly the south east corner of the lake. The Scoter has been seen at the north end of the lake but may have been pushed south by the sailing dinghies.

Garden Watch 13th Nov 2010.

After travelling far and wide recently I decided to stay at home today. I did a couple of jobs around the house, watched some footie on the t.v. and did a bit of a "Garden Watch"
Birds that visited my garden were as follows; 2 Magpie, 3 Dunnock, 2 Woodpigeon, 5 Collared Dove, 10 Chaffinch, 2 Blue Tit, 5 Great Tit, 2 Nuthatch, 2 Coal Tit, 1 House Sparrow, 3 Goldfinch, 2 Robin, 3 Blackbird.

A Days Birding in Norfolk

Saturday 6th November 2010.
A days birding in Norfolk with Brendan G and Dave J.

First stop was 1k south of Welney, noteworthy birds seen here were as follows; 40 Fieldfare, 15 Hooper Swan, 20 Bewick Swan, 2 Marsh Harrier, Sparrowhawk, Kestrel, Reed Bunting. No sign of reported Glossy Ibis so we decided to press on to Cley. 30 minutes later a message on Dave and Brendan's pagers "Glossy Ibis Welney" We all said it would happen!

Cley.
20 mins seawatching produced, Common Scoter, 20 Kittiwake in several small groups, 2 Goldeneye.
North Hide, 2 Grey Phalarope, Dunlin, Shoveler, Golden Plover, Ringed Plover, Redshank, Ruff, Pintail, Teal.
On the beach and in flight, a summer plumaged Arctic Tern.

On the reserve, 10+Twite, 10 Linnet, Redshank, Oystercatcher, Golden Plover, Curlew.
On the beach, 8+Shorelark.

Then back to Welney in search of Glossy Ibis!
Within 5 mins of arriving at Welney we spotted the Glossy Ibis showing well feeding furiously amonst a herd of cattle. It showed well for about 30 mins, then it apparently flew off whilst we were distracted by a Barn Owl hunting in the field on the opposite side of the road. We stayed until nightfall hoping for Short Eared Owl but no luck, however, we did see another Barn Owl hunting. So for second visit to Welney, Glossy Ibis and 2 Barn Owl.

Early sunday morning visit to Deadmans Hill nr Sandon, postcode SG7 6SF. Female Hen Harrier showing from 07:10 to 07:25, Buzzard, Red Kite, Sparrowhawk, 20+Red Legged Partridge, 16+ Grey Partridge.

Mid morning at Amwell. Pintail, Lapwing, Shoveler, Wigeon, Sparrowhawk, Goldcrest, 2 Water Rail, Grey Wagtail, 2 singing Cetti's Warbler. No sign of reported Bearded Tits.

Updates

A couple of visits to Woodoaks farm since last blog. Several Buzzard, 2 Red Kite, Little Owl, Linnet, Goldfinch, Goldcrest, Meadow Pipit and Skylark the most notable birds seen.

On Thurs from our works canteen window. Mixed tit flock consisting of, 6 Long Tailed Tit, 3 Great Tit, 2 Blue Tit and bringing up the rear a Coal Tit.

Friday 29th Oct 2010. I visited Grove Ferry and Oare Marshes both reserves are in Kent. Traffic on the M25 was diabolical on both the outward and return journies.
Notable birds at Grove Ferry, Lapwing, Golden Plover, Ruff, Bearded Tit, Cetti's Warbler, Snipe.
At Oare Marshes. 3 Little Egret, Redshank, Dunlin, Golden Plover, Grey Plover, 3 Snipe, Rock Pipit.

Saturday 30th October. 20 mins at Springwell Lake, Mixed Tit flock, 7 Long Tailed Tit, 2 Blue Tit and also a Goldcrest.

Snow Buntings at Cley

The highlight of a trip to Cley with Brendan G and Phil B today was at least 14 Snow Bunting. Other birds noted were as follows; Meadow Pipit, Skylark, Stonechat, Bearded Tit, Black Tailed Godwit, Lapwing, Oystercatcher, Dunlin, Turnstone, Redshank, Ringed Plover, Ruff, Knot, Curlew, Lapwing, Grey Plover, Spotted Redshank, Teal, Wigeon, Shoveler, Pintail, Shelduck, Brent Goose, Marsh Harrier, Kestrel, 14+ Snow Bunting in two groups of 2 then 12+, 30+Goldfinch, 3 very late House Martin.
Seawatch: 30+ Common Scoter, 15 Gannet, 6 Red Throated Diver, Guillemot, Kittiwake, Great Skua.
Also 1 Grey Seal.

Woodoaks Farm

An hour spent at Woodoaks Farm today, 20+Chaffinch and 1 Yellowhammer on or around haystack and farm outbuildings, Little Owl in old orchard, 6 Yellowhammer in old orchard hedgerow,  c30 Linnet feeding on track towards manure pile also bathing in puddles along the track, other birds seen were, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Skylark, Meadow Pipit, Goldfinch, Greenfinch and Grey Wagtail.

Norfolk/Suffolk Update

Back from four and a bit days birding in Norfolk and Suffolk. 120 species were seen and 2 heard. Highlights were Great Grey Shrike, Red Flanked Blue Tail, Firecrest, Yellow Browed Warbler, Lapland Bunting and Jack Snipe. A more detailed report will follow within the next couple of days.

Collective go mad in norfolk!

Off to sunny norfolk for a few days birding tomorrow. Hopefully the blog will be updated daily depending on the performance of my vodafone internet dongle.

Late afternoon/early evening. Clear visibility, 20c, Wind NE14. 3 Buzzard, 2 Yellowhammer, 10+ Skylark, 2 Goldfinch, 6 Swallow heading roughly north east.
