Lone Waxwing and 2 Smew

At 09:30 this morning I was driving along Baldwins Lane towards Croxley Green when I noticed a single Waxwing perched on the telephone wires directly above the road. I had a quick look 45 minutes later but it was not to be seen.

At about 14:30 I visited Bury Lake and then Scotsbridge Mill with Paul F. At Bury lake we noted the following; Wigeon, Pochard, Gadwall, Shoveler, Goldeneye, 6 Red Crested Pochard, Ring Necked Parakeet and best of all 2 Smew both showing well close in. At Stockers Farm a lone Lapwing patrolled the "flooded field."

Waxwings

I popped over to Hatfield today in search of the recently reported Waxwings. When I arrived I immediately connected with c70 Waxwings. I stayed for about 2 hours and their numbers steadily increased to c110. The birds spent most of the time perched up in the nearby poplars, then occasionally dropping down to feed on the rowan berries in Hillfield.

Hillfield is in the Birchwood area of Hatfield and off Longmead. The postcode for twat-nav users is AL10 0TZ
Another top quality pic!

Rainham Marshes

Sat 11th December 2010. A visit to RSPB Rainham Marshes and adjecent river thames forshore.

River Thames between reserve and concrete barges; Avocet, Black Tailed Godwit, Dunlin, Grey Plover, Curlew, Redshank, Lapwing, Snipe, Shelduck, Teal, Wigeon, Gadwall, Greater Black Backed Gull, Lesser Black Backed Gull, Herring Gull, Common Gull, Meadow Pipit, Greenfinch, Kestrel, Skylark.

RSPB Rainham Marshes; Little Grebe, Great Crested Grebe, Pintail, Shoveler, Wigeon, Teal, 2 squealing Water Rail, Cetti's Warbler, Redwing, Fieldfare, Kestrel, Sparrowhawk, Herring Gull, Common Gull, Stonechat, Reed Bunting.

We spent some time going through the gulls looking for a Yellow Legged Gull but drew a blank. In one of the hides there was a "Gull i.d. Workshop" we even asked the Gull experts had they seen any Yellow Legged Gulls. We were told that there were none on the reserve. Checking sighting on birdguides this morning I noticed a report of "16 Yellow Legged Gulls RSPB Rainham Marshes (11/12/2010)" Oh well **it happens!

To finish the day we spent an hour on the Serin Mound looking for Short Eared Owl, however, we drew a blank here too.
